- Women with early-stage breast cancer for whom chemotherapy was indicated and who used dietary supplements and multiple types of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) were less likely to start chemotherapy than nonusers of alternative therapies, according to latest research.
- Children living in agricultural areas are developing leukemia, brain tumors and other childhood cancers at an accelerated rate. Health problems in children have risen significantly in recent years, and the cause is primarily environmental. - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has ratcheted up its warning about the potential side effects of a class of commonly-prescribed powerful antibiotic, including the drug known by the brand name Cipro. In a safety announcement issued Thursday, the FDA is admitting the potential side effects often outweigh their benefits.
- A large new study confirms that exercise lowers the risk of many different types of cancer, and it goes a step further: It shows just how much the reduction in risk is. Check out the list of 13 types of cancer that can be affected.
- More governments around the world are moving to accept natural medicine: Could this be the beginning of a healthy future? In Switzerland, health insurance plans are on the cusp of covering homeopathy, herbal medicine, acupuncture, holistic care and traditional Chinese medicine. In 2009, two-thirds of the Swiss spoke out in favor of incorporating these important and long suppressed healthcare strategies into their healthcare system.
- Three cancer-stricken Nebraska farmers and an agronomist are suing Monsanto, alleging that the company misled consumers about the safety of Roundup, the most widely used herbicide around the globe. The World Health Organization labeled glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, as a likely carcinogen last year. The four Nebraskans suing all have non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, one of the types of cancer glyphosate is most associated with, the Lincoln Journal-Star reports.
